It was going to be another muggy, hot day in Atlanta so we decided to drive north to the mountains and the woods. We were heading towards the Chattahoochee National Forest and Hwy 52 which borders the NF, and runs through farm and apple country. But today, we were first stopping by Burt’s Pumpkin Farm in Dawsonville, Ga.
It is very early in the season and a weekday, and the crowds were nowhere in sight as we made our way inside and past the bakery goods counter (think all things pumpkin). I will stop there on the way out. 😉
I love going to Burt’s to see all of the different kinds and sizes of pumpkins laid out…
They expanded their store this year and I saw a lot of nice Halloween decor…
John and I posed near the great big pumpkins…
I spent a lot of time looking at all the different kinds of gourds and squash and pumpkins…
We paid for all my mini pumpkins and gourds, along with two small pieces of pumpkin roll and a loaf of pumpkin bread, and headed to the woods for a picnic.
By now it was really late for lunch, 2:00 pm, so we just pulled over on FS 28-2 and ate by the tailgate.
and I saw a couple nice ferns while eating…
- Christmas Fern
- Rattlesnake Fern

On the drive home, I saw some nice kudzu and wanted to give our daughter Susie a little taste of Georgia….
and I saw a lot of nice barns but this is the only one that’s almost in focus, as Big Red was moving along a back road at a good clip when I took it.
We made it home in time for dinner and vowed to get out again to the woods real soon.
Love all those pumpkins! And your barn picture turned out great!

Isn’t it nice to drive a little distance and forget there was ever a big city. What a cool farm! That is an amazing selection of gourds and squash. I love winter squash. Pumpkin bread is my favorite pumpkin treat…yum!! Tailgate lunch sounds perfect. Great fall day:)

I love field trips from home… There are a lot of neat places for day trips from here, with less than 2 hours driving. But, the only direction to escape the heat in the city is north!

What, no big pumpkin to take home? Sounds like a great outing. I haven’t seen any pumpkin farms out here in New Mexico. Hmmmm, I guess they don’t grow in deserts. 🙂

But, Sherry, I bet they sell them at Walmart and grocery stores! It’s funny but John asked me the same thing… I was so focused on checking out the gourds and mini-pumpkins that I never thought about getting a big one. And, it certainly wouldn’t be as big as those in the photos of John and me with the pumpkins! But, dang, I never thought of getting one for the front deck 🙂
